President's Column
By Natalie Spitzig, ActionCoach
Greetings, everyone! It is my absolute pleasure to be serving as your president for 2008-2009.

My first order of business is to say "Thank you, Janet Tingwald!" for providing the chapter with inspiring leadership, energy and commitment as president the past two years. Janet, we made some amazing strides under your direction.

We covered many of these accomplishments at our annual meeting on June 25th, however; I'd like to mention just a few.
  • Implementation of NAWBO-CI's local Website – This was a big step with many more to follow. Thank you to Kathy Towner, Lori Jones and Michelle Durand-Adams.
  • The Programs Committee is no longer a one- or two-person show – JoAnn Robbins, you've done an amazing job! Thank you to all of the members who have stepped up to help out!
  • Started doing "Coffee with NAWBO" – Many of you have told us that these are your favorite events. Our goal was to get you connected and get you talking. It's working! Thank you, Pam Schoffner, for your coordination and bravo to all of you who have hosted the coffees!
  • Corporate Partners Committee – To Phyllis Pearson, Karla Rendell, and Mary Jo Fitzgerald, my gratitude for saying "yes" and helping recruit and retain awesome corporate partners.
  • Public Policy Committee – Marge Munoz and Janet attended the national Public Policy Days in Washington, D.C to represent you and me. Marge, thank you for your passion and efforts to bring "public policy" to the forefront for our chapter!
  • Membership – Lori Jones, you've been phenomenal. Thank you for your organizational talents, ideas and for providing continuity for the past two years.
  • Advisory Board – We held the first of what will be tri-annual Advisory Board meetings to brainstorm and get direction from professional women and our corporate partners. We are very excited about the possibilities being discussed with our advisors for the upcoming year—and years.
It's been busy, it's been great AND there are so many incredible opportunities on the horizon for NAWBO-Central Iowa.

As a Board, our focus during the last two years has been on developing the chapter infrastructure. Going forward, we will continue to improve our internal processes but our main focus will be on growing our chapter membership, the number of corporate partners, and gaining exposure and recognition for NAWBO-Central Iowa in our local business communities. We'll continue to add more value for everyone who participates in our chapter. We are a resource, and we are a networking group. Both capabilities will serve WBO well when they utilize NAWBO-CI.

Thank you to everyone who made the last year such a huge success. May 2008-2009 be our BEST year yet!!

Golfers

Inaugural Golf Event Held
On June 25 NAWBO-CI had its inaugural golf tournament and its first annual meeting held after an afternoon of fun, friendship, and networking on and off the course. Through the tournament, silent auction and freewill offering of those attending, the chapter also raised nearly $1000 for the Chrysalis Foundation, a local foundation that develops strong women and girls in Greater Des Moines through education, grant making and philanthropy. Earlier in the year NAWBO-CI raised $7,900 for entrepreneurial programs for women and girls with a Celebrity Server event to benefit Chrysalis.

The Urbandale Golf and Country Club was home to the best-ball tournament and two free pre-tournament presentations. Golfers started the afternoon with a chipping clinic by UGCC pro Dick Lane and a golf etiquette presentation by Lisa Ballenger of Golf Etc. for Women. Then five foursomes of golfers and want-to-be golfers played the shotgun-start, best ball event.

Tournament winners were Kathy Anderson, Angela Bowman, Lori Jones and Amy Anderson-Peck, who finished the afternoon with a low score of 37. They took home gift certificates for Golf Etc. for Women. Winning golf lessons from Lisa Ballenger for their high-scoring performance were Cherish Anderson, Amy Kolln, Dawn Lull and JoAnn Robbins. Hole contest winners were Marcia Munger for longest drive, Marcee Peters for longest putt, and Kris Winter for closest to the pin.

Hole sponsors for the event were Natalie Spitzig, ActionCoach; Benefit Source, Inc; Blue Moon; Dawn R. Lull, CPA; Iowa Initiative to Reduce Unintended Pregnancies; Laurenzo Jones, LC; Principal Financial Group, and Urban Belly, LLC.

Prize donors were the Benefit Source, Blue Moon, Business Record, Dawn Lull CPA, Golf Etc. for Women, Harbor Grille at Saylorville Marina, Laurenzo Jones LC, Massage Heights, Nobbies Party Superstore and Soapourri Natural Bath & Body.

Following social time and nourishment in the UGCC Grill, the evening concluded with NAWBO-CI annual meeting, prize presentations and drawings. A trio of NAWBO books on business ownership was made available to all attending.

Setting Your Fees
Setting fees for your products and services can be tricky, and sticking to them even more so! Here are five quick tips to keep in mind when establishing and asking for your worth:

  1. Identify characteristics of your ideal clients/customers, then target them. Last spring I attended a conference where facilitator's mantra was, "Work with the willing." That has proven extremely helpful in my business, too!

  2. Assess your experience and achievements. Write down your degrees, training, memberships, leadership positions, and pivotal experiences—as well as key skills gained as a result. Build your worth on paper so you can feel more confident about your fees.

  3. Develop a healthy attitude towards money. If you view wealthy people with disdain or suspicion, you'll find it difficult to reach a level of wealth yourself. Examine underlying attitudes you may hold towards wealth, money and abundance.

  4. Do what you love! And believe in your worth. If you don't believe in your product, you won't be able to sell it. It's that simple.

  5. Keep your values close at hand. Give generously within the realm of your values and priorities, and don't be afraid to ask for what you want.
As Nicole Williams says in "Earn What You're Worth": "Anyone can love your idea, think you're brilliant, and valiantly support you, but if you can't get anyone to pay for what you're selling, you've got an idea—not a business venture." Believe in your product and yourself and you're well on your way!

SHOP Act for Small Biz Health Care
Words for WIPP (Women Impacting Public Policy): Contact your Senators and Representatives and ask them to cosponsor the Small Business Health Options Act (S. 2795/H.R.6210). If passed, the SHOP Act will allow for small businesses and the self-employed to pool together in nationwide and statewide pools for health insurance. This will allow for greater access to affordable healthcare as well as expand the range of options for health plans. Ask Congress to support this important bill!
