Entrepreneurship Week Activities
NAWBO-CI is now working on plans to bring in a nationally recognized speaker to Des Moines on Thursday, February 26, as part of our chapter's special Entrepreneurship Week (E-Week) activities. From February 21 – 28, NAWBO-CI will be among the organizations sponsoring special events to celebrate our entrepreneurial spirit and educate WBOs. Cherish Anderson, Nanny2Shoes, is coordinating chapter activities and continues to recruit WBOs to help in the planning, promotion and execution of our chapter’s plans. If you're interested in making a difference for yourself and other WBOs in central Iowa, contact cherishanderson@nannyshoesiowa.com or call 279-6800.
Coffee & Coffee+ Hostesses for 2009
NAWBO-CI's informal morning and afternoon gatherings each month bring members and prospective members together to share challenges, ideas, connections and friendship. All members are invited to host a 2009 get-together.
The only obligations of the host are to pick the location, pass around a sign-up sheet for attendees, get the conversation started, seek the involvement of every woman who is present and communicate results to the coffee coordinator. We call them coffees, but in the afternoon the locations selected might involve enjoying a cocktail.
Please contact Pam Schoffner, pam@schoffner.com 965-8850, if you would be willing to host on any of the following pre-selected dates:
8:30 a.m. Coffee (held on the last Thursday of the month) – Jan. 29, (February coffees not yet scheduled; may revolve around E-Week activities), March 26, April 30, May 28, June 25, July 30, Aug. 27, Sept. 24, Oct. 29 (no coffees are scheduled at the end of November of December), 4:00 p.m. Coffee+ (held on the second Tuesday of the month) – Jan. 13, (February coffees not yet scheduled; may revolve around E-Week activities), March 10, April 14, May 12, June 9, July 14, Aug. 14, Sept. 8, Oct. 13, Nov. 10 (no December coffee is scheduled)
Indepth Networking
At NAWBO-CI's September 30th gathering, Janet Tingwald, The Coaching Advantage Group, and Dawn Lull, CPA, won the "no-one-can-hold-a-candle-to-us" networking prizes. Pairs of WBOs matched up to probe for the three most obscure things they had in common in an exercise to expand the depth of knowledge we have about our peers. The findings were unique throughout the room, but Janet and Dawn won the top vote by matching up on having had a pet named Boots, having raised pigs, working with the same artist and one other unique personal similarity that’s not included here.
Venture Capital Meeting Participants
NAWBO-CI members served as greeters, session facilitators and panelists and during the ninth Iowa Venture Capital and Entrepreneur Conference on October 15 in Des Moines. "Thanks to participating members, NAWBO and our chapter were visible as supporters at this annual event to connect customers, money and markets," said Margie Munoz of Munoz Productions, who coordinated chapter involvement and volunteered time at the conference. Munoz thanks the following individuals for sharing their expertise and time to take on conference duties: Cherish Anderson, Nanny2Shoes; Karen Jackson, Premium Designs LLC; Amy Kolln, SendOut Cards; Phyllis Pearson, Phyllis Pearson PLC; Karla Rendall, representing corporate partner Vantus Bank; Sandy Renshaw, Purple Wren Communications; and Natalie Spitzig, ActionCOACH.
Members Needed
A few additional members are needed to help with small or one-time tasks for the NAWBO-CI Membership Committee. And if you or one of your employees have Excel database knowledge, Amy Kolln jakolln@mchsi.com 515-297-3434) would love to discuss a “do-when-you-have-time” project.

Self-Employed Women Differ From Their Wage/Salary-Earning Counterparts
Self-employed women differ from their wage and salary-earning counterparts in several human capital areas. Findings are contained in a report, Human Capital and Women’s Business Ownership, released this year by the Office of Advocacy of the U.S. Small Business Administration.
The report, written by Business Development Advisors with funding from the Office of Advocacy, compared self-employed women to other working women and found that: self-employed women have greater educational attainment.Self-employed women are more likely to be in managerial occupations.Self-employed women are more likely to work in non-traditional occupations.Self-employed women are likely to be older.
"Human capital factors such as education and experience have long been known to have a positive correlation with entrepreneurship," said Dr. Chad Moutray, chief economist for the Office of Advocacy. “This report delves deeper into women's business ownership and shows that factors such as occupational skills and entrepreneurial preparedness are essential to women’s entrepreneurship.”

SBA Submits Final Women’s Contracting Rule
On September 26, the U.S. Small Business Administration submitted to the Federal Register its final rule concerning women-owned small business (WOSB) contracting procedures, plus a new proposed rule on the industries eligible for WOSB contract assistance. The rule was submitted in advance of a September 29 hearing in a federal lawsuit that required SBA to show progress toward finalizing the rule.
The proposed rule introduces an alternative data source that, if adopted, would significantly increase the number of industries under which a set aside could be established to 31, from the four that were permissible under the previously proposed data set. Public comments on the rule were due by October 31 and all comments received were to be posted at www.regulations.gov

"Lessons in Leadership" by Elizabeth Nead Two years ago Liz Nead became part of the strategy-development team with a new company in an already imploding mortgage industry. This move enabled her to meet with the CEOs and leaders of virtually every major lending institution and vendor in the country. At the end of each meeting, she took time to investigate the background and philosophies of influential people who were thriving in a suffering industry. Liz, the Minneapolis-raised daughter of Indian immigrants who tried to fit into the “Midwestern beauty ideal,” brings a unique background and 15 years of industry experience to the podium as she shares business and personal strategies for thriving in today’s environment.
